Gold leaf comes in many carats which mean different shades of gold. As the carats decrease, so does the gold color. 24ct. and 23ct. should be used for exterior work. Anything less should be sealed to avoid tarnishing. Most leaf is 9 ct. up to 24 ct. The lower ct. is alloyed with silver.

The leaf comes in “books” of 25 and also in rolls and loose leaf. Patent leaf is lightly pressed on paper. Composition leaf comes loose, on rolls and as patent. See Gold Leaf Glossary

Composition leaf is made from various metals and alloys. (copper and zinc) This allows for different colors from gold (also called “Dutch Metal) to copper, silver and aluminum to variegated colors such as red, blue, green, and black. It will tarnish, and will require sealing.

When applying the leaf on a flat surface, lay the leaf on, lightly press, rubbing completely and carefully pull off the paper, (patent). If on an uneven surface, the use of a medium soft brush to “tap” the paper and transfer the gold works quite well.

After your gold is applied, very lightly, using a soft mop brush, loosen the residual gold flakes, (skewings). Pushing and lightly “stirring” the brush not only will remove the extras but also help to cover any sizing that may have been missed.
