Sealing Gold Leaf |
|||||

|
24 ct. gold dose not require sealing to avoid tarnish as it dose not tarnish. 23 ct. gold has minimum silver and tarnish is not a factor. These 2 are the choice for exterior work. 22 ct. and below should be used for interiors and anything below 22 should be sealed. All composite leaf and silver leaf should be sealed or it will tarnish. Silver needs to be sealed immediately. Because the leaves are metal, any water base sealer will cause tarnish. Shellac is commonly used or even more preferred are MSA Varnishes. MSA is Mineral Spirit Acrylic, which is a clear non yellowing acrylic in a mineral spirit solvent, allowing it to be applied to metals. |
