Common Brushes and Tools for Paint & Faux

 
 
 
 

Chip Brush”- general purpose, throw away type.

Sash Brush – Bristles cut at an angle, many sizes, favored by professional painters for “cutting in”. Available in polyester bristle or china bristle (hog hair) and a variety of blends.

Strie’ brush – Used for dragging for strie look. Wallpaper brush sometimes used for same effect.

Badger brush – Used for softening, for graining and marbling.

Hog Hair Softner – Used same as badger

Mottler - For mottling, creating moiré in wood graining

Pencil Writer - Used for painting veins for marbling and grain figures

Flat angle fitch – Used for lining. Thin stripes

Stipple Brush – Used for stippling, to blend glaze, or “feather it out”

Flogger Brush – Used to create fine pore structure and to straight grain

Stencil brush – Round brush in a variety of diameters used for stenciling

 

Check Roller – Used for making pores (oak)

Rubber combs – Used for creating grain

Metal Combs – Same as rubber combs

Natural Sea Sponge – Used for glazes, stippling, marbling and graining

 

5 in 1 – Tool used for scraping, opening paint cans, cleaning roller sleeves and more.

Putty knife – For filling in holes in wood work or applying small patches, scraping.

6 inch blade/putty knife – commonly used for patching holes using joint compound

Caulk gun – for caulking trim and casings

Drop cloths – To protect floors from overspray, paint drops, etc.

Painters Plastic – To cover furniture, used for masking, and also used in faux finishing for “Frottage” look

Wire Brush/comb – Used to clean brushes

Roller frame and sleeves – For rolling paint finishes on walls and ceilings, also for glazes.

Paint Tray – For rolling paint out of, sometimes 5 gal pail is used.

Extension pole – Attaches to roller frame, usually expandable for greater reach.
